Huawei Gains in TD-SCDMA and WCDMA Chip
August 1, 2010
Last week China Mobile announced the result of latest bid for TD-SCDMA construction. As I said in my last posting, the bid, the fourth in the past two years, is probably the last large-scale project, aims to extend 3G coverage to 330 cities (238 now) and improve service in current cities. Under pressure from rivals and suffering from a negative public opinion, China Mobile pins high hopes on continuing expansion after spending about 100 billion yuan ($15 billion) for the first three rounds.

Nortel Patent Auction Benefits LTE Market | www.isuppli.com
We analyzed the essentiality of Nortel's 4G patent portfolio that are crucial to deriving premium royalty rates. We have conducted multiple patent searches at several patent databases. We then compare Nortel's IPR position against its peers and the corresponding royalty rates that Nortel’s peers are expecting to charge. We obtained the reasonable royalty rates for Nortel over a lifespan of 15 years for LTE. We then calculate the valuation of Nortel's patents.

A nationwide, wholesale, terrestrial-satellite, mobile broadband network – one that uses a globally endorsed LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology. A vision - imbued with an inherent openness and possibilities - unencumbered by walled-gardens and the status quo. The twin motivating factors of high-speed, and high-capacity, coupled with mobility are significant pillars in the inexorable demand for connectivity to multimedia services, in the information age.

By May, China had 20 million 3G customers, according to data from operators. China Mobile held 9.3 million while China Unicom saw the largest monthly increase for WCDMA with more than 1 million. In part growth is propelled by handset selection, price cut and subsidies. If the momentum can hold, there is a possibility 3G users will reach 35 million by year’s end. During the past two years, 3G projection has been scaled down from 120 million to a subdued 50 million and downward as June passed.

Anxiety over network convergence (NC) is finally settled. After a long wait in more than a decade and turf wrestling for a month, NC in China is seeing some light at the end of the tunnel but its outlook is far from clear.

China Mobile (CMC) reportedly will begin extended trials of TD-LTE, commonly called 4G, after the World Expo. However, it would be mistaken to assume the operator is abandoning TD-SCDMA, a Chinese version of 3G which remains sluggish after nearly two and half years. The market is growing but not at the pace CMC had hoped to see. By the end of April, the latest figure available, CMC added 713,000 new TD-SCDMA customers to a total 8.4 million.

China Mobile may soon find itself at a crossroads never before in the company history. No, it is not about market share; the cellphone operator still owns more than 70% cellphone customers at a staggering 540 million, and its dominance is unlikely to reverse anytime soon. Overall, the company is running a stable and progressive course as operating revenue rose 7.7% in the first quarter and profit up 1.1%.

Shanghai will host the World Expo between May and October. The event is not only a sensation for thrill-seeking public, but also a unique stage for new technology and services. As long expected, China Mobile will run TD-LTE, a high-speed version of TD-SCDMA, or 4G, during the fanfare. Last week, the operator launched a demo network on premise which delivered up to 28Mbps in downlink, about ten-fold faster than current TD-SCDMA network.

It appears the slow-coming spring has also foretold a chilly start of 3G in 2010. Figures from three operators show a lackluster picture. China Mobile added a meager 870,000 new TD-SCDMA customers during the first two months to a total 4.28 million, in which February fell some 23% from January and even more from 2009. With two months gone in the year, the company is facing an uphill battle to achieve the goal of 50 million for 2010 it has just announced.
