Diabetes is a disease characterized by the body's inability to sufficiently produce insulin to properly metabolize carbohydrates. The three main forms the condition are Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by destruction of beta-cells of the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin. Gestational diabetes is usually a temporary disorder occurring during pregnancy when insulin resistance develops due to hormonal changes and weight gain.
